Introduction to Public Affairs I & II
This two-semester long, freshman course introduces students to classic readings in liberal democratic theory and American political development, and explores the contemporary performance of democratic states across the globe. The objective of this course is for students to develop and deepen their understanding of theories and practices associated with liberal democracy, authoritarianism, and populism; to enhance their critical thinking skills; and finally, to learn how to identify, evaluate, and construct evidence-based arguments. First semester readings include: The Federalist Papers, Democracy in America, and Souls of Black Folks. Second semester readings include: The Origins of the Urban Crisis and Making All Black Lives Matter.
